Cybercriminals continue to pose as companies and institutions to trick users into stealing their data. The National Institute of Cybersecurity (Incibe) has warned about the discovery of a new campaign of malicious messages in which criminals pose as Social Security.

As in so many other cases, the scam develops through SMS text messages. In these, the criminals try to alert the user stating that it is necessary to update the health card through the link provided to avoid losing the rights that said card offers.

«Social Security: Your health card requires an update. Update it to maintain your services”, can be read in one of the SMS shared from Incibe.

There are also other cases in which criminals explain that the user already has a new health card at his disposal, however, if he wants to have access to it, he must follow the instructions of the criminals.

In all cases, SMS are accompanied by a link in which, supposedly, the user must ‘click’ to update their card information. If you click on it, the Internet user is redirected to a fraudulent page that pretends to be an official government site.

Inside, the criminals ask the user through a form for data such as full name, email and date of birth. Information that can then be used to carry out targeted scams. And it is that it is not the same that you receive a random email in which you are told that your bank account has been blocked than that this message incorporates your name among other personal information.

It should be remembered that all cybersecurity experts recommend distrusting those SMS and emails in which a third party requests personal or bank information and that seek to alert. The best thing that can be done in these cases is to get in touch with the company or institution that supposedly sent the message.
