Every December 25, countries with a Catholic tradition celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, there is a country in Latin America where more than 100 years ago, Christmas stopped being the official celebration.

This is Uruguay, where in 1919, and as part of the secularization of the country’s laws, Christmas was no longer officially celebrated.

The country’s secularization process aimed to achieve the institutional separation of Church and State. Therefore, in addition to suppressing Christmas, they also did so with other religious holidays.
