The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would use nuclear weapons only if its presence was threatened, according to the DOS news agency.
The comment comes about four weeks after Russia sent troops to Ukraine amid Western concerns that the conflict there could escalate into a nuclear war. The Tass news agency did not provide further details.
Last month, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s nuclear forces to remain vigilant. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said on February 28 that it had placed its nuclear missile forces and the northern and Pacific navies on enhanced combat duty, according to the Interfax news agency.
