There are Ballons d’Or which are discussed more than others. The eighth awarded Monday evening to Lionel Messi at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris is one of those which is not necessarily unanimous. Obviously rewarded for his only World Cup and not his season with PSG, Messi’s appointment sparked numerous criticisms.

One of the strongest comes from a former winner, the German Lothar Matthäus, Ballon d’or 1990. According to him, the Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland, deserved much more to lift the trophy after his hat-trick achieved in last season with the Citizens (Championship-Champions League-FA Cup).

“Let him go cry elsewhere”

“Over the season, Haaland has done better than Messi,” explained Matthäus on Sky Sport Germany. This reward is not deserved. It’s proof that the World Cup matters more than anything. For me, no one did better than Haaland, he was the best over the entire season. He won important titles with City, breaking records. This vote is a farce, even if I have always been a fan of Messi. »

Obviously, this release did not please Argentina. On its Instagram site, the newspaper Diario Ole asks: “what is happening? Were they all hidden (before criticizing Messi) or what? “. A comment which led to an unqualified response from Angel Di Maria, the former PSG winger, today at Benfica: “Let him go cry elsewhere”…
