Thomas Gottschalk Announces Retirement Amidst Cancer Battle and “Brain Fog”
As of December 7th,2025,entertainment icon Thomas Gottschalk has announced his retirement from public life, revealing a battle with a rare and risky form of cancer and the debilitating side effects of its treatment. The 75-year-old television personality delivered the news on Saturday, december 6th,during the RTL show “Because they don’t know whatS happening,” leaving the stage to the Status Quo classic “Rockin’ all over the world” alongside his wife,Karina.
Gottschalk’s departure marks the end of a remarkable career spanning decades, best known for his long-running and beloved ZDF show “Wetten,dass..?” He exited the stage “without tears, instead with a smile,” despite acknowledging a diminished capacity for his signature swift wit. Audience members showed their support with handmade signs proclaiming, “Thomas, you are a legend” and “Bet we miss thommy.”
The presenter disclosed that his cancer is “very rare and also very dangerous,” a private struggle he has largely kept out of the public eye. While reluctant to discuss the details,he expressed cautious optimism, noting that his PSA levels – an indicator of cancer – had returned to zero following surgery. He remains hopeful for the results of upcoming follow-up examinations.
Recent public appearances, though, have been hampered by “brain fog,” a cognitive side effect of his cancer treatment. According to Gottschalk, this “fog” worsens throughout the day, leading to unintentional gaffes. He alluded to instances at the Bambi Gala and the Romy Awards where he felt he “stood next to [himself] and said stupid things.” His appearance at the Bambi Awards, in particular, drew criticism.
Despite the challenges, Gottschalk maintains a positive outlook. He revealed to fellow presenter Günther Jauch that he is ready to step away from the spotlight. “At 75, I think it’s the right time to say I’m retiring,” he stated. He previously described his approach to hosting as responding to “whatever crap was asked of me, but always for my audience,” frequently enough relying on improvisation and minimal preparation. “But at some point that’s no longer possible,” he conceded.
In a memorable moment from his final edition of “Wetten,dass..?” in 2023, Gottschalk was driven off the stage on an excavator, a fittingly unconventional send-off for a presenter known for his flamboyant style.
Gottschalk intends to focus on his health and well-being in retirement. He expressed confidence that he won’t be bored, quipping that he’ll simply call Günther Jauch if he needs entertainment.
