THE Association of Hoteliers of Thrace requests the inclusion of the accommodations of the Municipal Community of Alexandroupoli and Samothraki in the operations of the P.E. of Evros, which based on the KYA may express an interest in granting aid in the form of a grant for the financial losses suffered by the August and September 2023 fires.

What does the letter say?

In a relevant letter to the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kostis Hatzidakis and the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Triandopoulos and notification to the office of the prime minister and to the deputies of the Prefecture of Evros, the Association of Hoteliers of Thrace states, among other things:

“…During the fires of August 2023, the region of Alexandroupoli and Evros experienced an unrepeatable biblical destruction of thousands of acres of forest, agricultural and urban land as well as urban and productive infrastructure leading to an incalculable disruption of the local economy and its productive fabric area. The evacuation of hotel units, the early departure of tourists, the subsequent cancellations of reservations for the next period of time as well as the resulting negative publicity led to an early end of the tourist season for the wider region. The unspeakable disaster in the area of Alexandroupoli seriously hurt the “steam engine” of the summer tourist product of Thrace, with the result that all hotel businesses have suffered irreparable financial loss.

Pointing out that almost all of the hotel businesses of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis are based in the municipal community of Alexandroupolis “which suffered equally from the devastating consequences of the fire”, the Association of Hoteliers of Thrace requests the “correction of the specific decision offering the hotel industry an opportunity to redress to some extent the incalculable damage caused by the fires.”
