A fresh take on the works of Latvian playwright Rūdolfs Blaumaņis is set to premiere at the Liepāja Theatre on November 29, offering audiences a poignant reflection on modern society through a period tragicomedy.
The Liepāja Theatre is poised to unveil “Three Funerals and Two Weddings,” a new production helmed by acclaimed director Mārtiņš Eihe, marking his return to the theatrical landscape after a period away. The play, crafted by playwright Laila Burāne, isn’t a straightforward adaptation, but rather a dynamic “remix” weaving together characters and narratives from various Blaumaņis short stories and plays.
A Foundation of Latvian Drama Reimagined
Eihe emphasizes the foundational importance of Rūdolfs Blaumaņis to Latvian dramatic literature. While he previously explored Blaumaņis’ work with the short story “In the Shadow of Death,” this new project represents a more ambitious undertaking. “Blaumanis’ world is a living multiverse, where both the author’s works and their echoes in us live side by side,” Burāne explained, highlighting the play’s intention to move beyond mere reverence and embrace a playful spirit. She describes the experience of engaging with the material as “diving into a deep winding river for a ‘little splash.’”
Reflecting Modernity Through a Period Lens
The narrative of “Three Funerals and Two Weddings” serves as a compelling mirror, reflecting contemporary issues such as the commodification of personal experience and the erosion of traditional values. The play explores a world where even genuine emotion is suspect, ushering in a new era of tragicomedy. According to Eihe, the production is a “fine summary of Latvianness,” prompting audiences to contemplate their identity and values in a rapidly changing world. The play aims to provide both emotional resonance and intellectual stimulation, encouraging viewers to critically examine their own life choices.
A Collaborative Creative Vision
Bringing this ambitious vision to life is a talented team of artists. Māri Ruska is responsible for set design, while Inga Siliņa has crafted the costumes. Aigaras Apinītis serves as choreographer, and Mārtinas Feldmanis is the lighting designer.
The cast features a wealth of established Liepāja Theatre talent, including Agnese Jēkabsone, Mārtiņš Kalita, Anda Albuže, Inese Kučinska, Agnija Dreimane, Kaspars Gods, Rolands Beķeris, Hugo Puriņš, and Armands Kaušelis.
The production is part of the Liepāja Theatre’s 119th season subscription for the big hall, offering patrons access to five diverse performances at a reduced price. Tickets for “Three Funerals and Two Weddings” are currently available for purchase, and can also be secured as part of a season ticket, guaranteeing preferred seating and additional benefits.
