Three people were injured due to shooting at a Caribbean “summer carnival” in downtown Rotterdam (Netherlands), Dutch police said in a statement on Sunday, adding that three people were arrested, including the shooter and a victim. The motive for the shooting, which took place at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, was not given by law enforcement in the port city, who said they opened fire on the shooter.
“Officers saw a suspect shoot a victim. They then fired several shots at the suspect,” police said in a statement. “The suspect and the victim were taken to hospital and arrested,” she continued. “A woman was injured in a fall as she walked away from the incident,” she said. The incident took place near the Coolsingel, a major boulevard in the city center, according to the police.
Strong presence of law enforcement
Shortly after, officers arrested a third suspect nearby. The “summer carnival” for safety stopped the program after the shooting, said the public broadcaster NOS. Local television station TV Rijnmond posted a video on its Instagram account showing a gun between tram tracks, a heavy police presence and a person being taken away by ambulance.
After the shooting, “there were screams and people running in all directions,” according to the channel. The “Summer Carnival”, scheduled from Friday to Sunday in the port city, describes itself as a large “Caribbean gathering”, including concerts, parade, arts and culinary stands. A 29-year-old Rotterdammer was also injured in the city center around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday after being stabbed, according to the Twitter account, renamed X, of the Rotterdam police.
