Omar Atzili, score: 9
A huge hat-trick and a shot for the team’s diamond
Eliel Peretz, score: 3
Got the reins and was very disappointed
Remember that Maccabi Haifa? Yes, the one that recorded a huge Champions League qualifying campaign and beat Juventus only about five months ago? So tonight (Monday) it wasn’t the Italian luxury team that stood opposite, nor the Red Star, but that doesn’t detract from the tremendous display of the champion, who remembered oblivion and returned to herself after a long period at the expense of the city rival who works in the Carmel derby, with a big 1:4 which proves, at least for now, that the crisis is behind her.
Above all, this game proved (again) that when Omar Azili is good, Maccabi Haifa is good. After eight games in which he did not score, number 7 in green broke form with a purposeful display of a hat trick and an assist, as he equals Eran Zahavi with 15 goals at the top of the Premier League’s scorers table. After the slap in the painful elimination from the cup, Maccabi Haifa helps itself in a big way, leaving the gap with Po’el Beer Sheva at 4 points and apparently eliminating Maccabi Tel Aviv for good from the championship race, when it is already 8 points away from it. For Hapoel Haifa, on the other hand, even the faint chance of an upper playoff has been erased, and it will play in the lower playoff.
What made the difference is probably the offensive line-up, especially with which Barak Becher came up. Dia Saba, Chiron Sherry, Omar Atzili, Dolev Haziza and Franzi Piero – all of these started the attack of the champion, who also welcomed back Pierre Cornot who started in the lineup for the first time since the injury. Faced with this, Hapoel had no tools to deal with and was defeated right from the start. Atzili had a double after 5 minutes (2′ and 5′), when in the second half he added an assist to Chiron Sherry (56′). Liran Sardal scored for the guest with a wonderful goal (69′), but three minutes later Atzili’s third came to seal the game’s result.
