Three state elections in front of the chest – From March, the CDU under Chief Merz must deliver – domestic politics

by time news

There will be no grace period for the designated CDU chairman Friedrich Merz (66).

As early as the first half of 2022, three young CDU Prime Ministers will have to fight for their office in state elections.

The start is made on March 27th in Saarland, where Tobias Hans (43) rules. On May 8th, Daniel Günther (48) in Schleswig-Holstein is about to continue his Jamaica coalition and a week later Hendrik Wüst (46) wants to defend the wafer-thin majority in North Rhine-Westphalia.

If the CDU is thrown out of government in all three countries, this would have consequences: The traffic lights would then also have a solid majority in the Federal Council and could easily govern. Lower Saxony will be there in October.

Merz is combative, says to BILD am Sonntag: “We have the chance to remain or become the strongest party in all four countries!”

Land under for Günther in Kiel?

Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther (48, CDU) has been ruling in a coalition with the FDP and the Greens since 2017 and wants to continue his work. To do this, he would have to gain significantly in favor of the electorate, currently the Union in the north is 21 percent – and thus well behind the SPD (28 percent).

In May, the CDU must be ahead, says Günther to BILD am Sonntag: “Everything else makes it difficult for the CDU to justify a claim to a government.” In return, Günther wants to “avoid mistakes that the Union made in the federal election campaign. Our unity is an important success factor ”. Schleswig-Holstein has four seats in the Federal Council.

Is Wüst defending Laschet heritage in North Rhine-Westphalia?

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (46, CDU) has been in office for just two months as the successor to Armin Laschet. In the polls, there is a head-to-head race between the CDU and SPD (both 27 percent), the black-yellow coalition currently does not have a majority.

Wüst to BILD am Sonntag: “So many broken promises in a very short time inevitably cause frustration and disappointment in the population.” NRW has six seats in the Federal Council.

Does Hans stay in luck in Saarland?

Tobias Hans (43, CDU) would like to continue to govern Saarland in a coalition with the SPD – and not as a junior partner. In the last polls, his Union is 28 percent, well behind the SPD (33 percent). But Hans doesn’t (yet) worry about the elections in March.

“Current polls are currently still heavily influenced by the federal election,” says Hans about BamS. “Everything is open. With Friedrich Merz, we have realigned ourselves and will also set accents that are recognizable in terms of content. ”Hans took over the office in March 2018 from Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (59, CDU). The Saarland has three seats in the Federal Council.
