Malappuram: A stepfather has been arrested in connection with the death of a three-year-old boy in Tirur. Arman, a native of Bengal, was arrested by the police from Palakkad railway station. He had drowned in Tirur after taking the child to the hospital last night. The child’s mother Mumtaz Beevi was taken into custody yesterday.

Mumtaz Beevi’s first husband is Sheikh Rafeeq, a native of Bengal. The son of this relationship is three-year-old Sheikh Rafiq. Mumtaz and Rafeeq separated a year ago. She later married Arman. They started living with their family in a rented quarters in Tirur Illathappadam ten days ago.

Armaan rushed the boy to the hospital last night after he was injured after falling in the bathroom. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, there were signs of injuries to the head and other parts of the body. But when the baby was pronounced dead, Armaan drowned in the hospital. With this, the hospital authorities informed the police.

Arman entered Palakkad by night train from Tirur. Police were conducting an extensive search to find him. CCTV footage of the accused from the hospital was also released. Arman was apprehended from the Palakkad railway station on Thursday morning while the search was on. Only by questioning him in detail will it be clear whether the child was beaten to death or not.
