Worldwide Candle Lighting: Germany Commemorates Lost Children with Wave of Remembrance

A poignant tradition is unfolding across Germany and the world this month as families and communities prepare to honor the memories of children lost too soon. Approximately 20,000 children and young adults die in Germany each year due to illness, accidents, premature birth, or stillbirth, leaving behind a legacy of grief and a need for collective remembrance.

A Global Wave of Light

Under the banner of “Worldwide Candle Lighting” – a global initiative – the memorial day for deceased children is observed annually on the second Sunday in December. The deeply moving ceremony involves mourners placing a lit candle in their windows at 7 p.m. local time. As candles are extinguished in one time zone, they are simultaneously lit in the next, creating a continuous “wave of light” that encircles the globe for 24 hours.

“Every light in the window stands for the knowledge that these children have brightened up life and that they will never be forgotten,” explained a spokesperson for the Federal Association of Orphaned Parents and grieving siblings. The event serves as a powerful symbol of unity and enduring love, offering solace to those navigating the profound pain of loss.

Remembrance Services Across Thuringia

The Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM) is hosting a series of devotional services, church gatherings, and memorial events open to parents, siblings, relatives, friends, and anyone feeling a connection to the cause. Several specific events are planned throughout Thuringia on December 14th:

  • Gotha: A prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Church of Reconciliation, honoring deceased children, grandchildren, and siblings. The service will include the reading of names and dates of life, accompanied by the lighting of candles.
  • Erfurt: The “Orphaned Parents Erfurt” association is hosting a memorial service at the Brunnenkirche, beginning with a gathering at 4:30 p.m., followed by a commemoration at 5 p.m., and culminating in the global commemoration at 7 p.m.
  • Ilmenau: Those affected, alongside representatives from the Protestant parish and hospice association, will gather at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Jakobus Church for a service of remembrance.
  • Nordhausen: A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. in the Christ Church, followed by a reception with refreshments.
  • Jena: The hospice’s orphaned parents self-help group will begin their memorial at 2 p.m. in Goethe Park with the release of balloons, followed by a memorial hour featuring candles, music, poetry, and verse in the former hospice.
  • Weimar: A service commemorating deceased children will be held at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Sophien and Hufeland Clinic, with an opportunity to light a candle in remembrance.
  • East Thuringia: A memorial service focused on the theme “Walk-n in the realm of tears” will be held at 3 p.m. in the St. Elisabeth Church Do.
  • Sondershausen & Artern: The self-help group “Orphaned Parents Sondershausen and Artern” will host a memorial service at 3 p.m. at the Düne Family Center.
  • Hildburghausen: An ecumenical memorial service for orphaned parents will be held at 5 p.m. in Christ Church, organized by the church community, deaconry, and hospice association. Further details can be found at www.veid.de.

These events provide vital spaces for shared grief, remembrance, and support during a time that can be particularly challenging for those who have experienced the loss of a child. The enduring power of the “Worldwide Candle Lighting” tradition and the dedication of organizations like the EKM underscore the importance of acknowledging and honoring the lives of these young souls.
