Riley Greene’s World Baseball Classic Decision: A Tug-of-War Between Puerto Rico, Team USA, and the Tigers

The Detroit Tigers’ star outfielder, Riley Greene, is at the center of an international baseball recruitment battle, with both Puerto Rico and Team USA vying for his participation in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The decision, however, remains unresolved as Greene weighs his options against prioritizing preparation for the 2026 season with the Tigers.

Greene, coming off a breakout 2023 campaign with 36 home runs and 111 RBIs, alongside consecutive All-Star selections, has become a highly sought-after player for the tournament. According to one baseball official, “He’s a run producer… very talented. I love the way he plays. He plays hard, and he has a lot of passion.” His potential impact is clear, with the possibility of bolstering a Puerto Rican lineup already featuring stars like Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa.

The connection to Puerto Rico runs deep, stemming from his mother’s heritage. He already has established relationships with fellow Tigers All-Star Javier Báez and coach Joey Cora, potentially easing his transition into the team. “I shoot him a text,” a team representative stated, adding, “There’s no doubt that Joey and Javy have had conversations with him. He’s on our [preliminary] roster, and if he wants to participate, he will be more than welcome, and I will be very excited.”

However, Greene’s past complicates the matter. Before being drafted by the Tigers, he was a key member of the gold medal-winning American side at the 2018 COPABE U-18 Pan American Championships, alongside future MLB stars like Bobby Witt Jr., Corbin Carroll, CJ Abrams, and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Adding a World Baseball Classic title with the United States would represent a significant achievement for the young outfielder.

Greene was previously invited to play for Puerto Rico in the 2023 Classic but chose to remain in Spring Training to focus on his development after an injury-shortened rookie season. While he has received another invitation, reports suggesting a commitment to Puerto Rico were quickly refuted, indicating the situation remains fluid.

His chances of securing a spot on the heavily stacked Team USA roster are uncertain. While General Manager Michael Hill and manager Mark DeRosa admire Greene’s game, roster balance is a key consideration. “We’ve talked a lot about Riley,” Hill explained. “When you look at the [roster] makeup, we’ve already announced [Aaron] Judge. We’ve announced PCA and Carroll. Riley’s another left-handed bat, so we’ve talked about finding a balanced roster, not overly left-handed or right-handed.”

Ultimately, Greene has a third option: to forgo participation altogether and dedicate himself fully to preparing for the 2026 season with the Tigers. Given his promising career trajectory, this option remains viable.

Other Tigers Players in the Mix

Greene isn’t the only Detroit Tiger potentially participating in the Classic:

  • Skubal: Team USA is interested in having pitcher Matt Skubal join their roster, but his upcoming contract season adds complexity. The flexible rules of the Classic allow pitchers to make a start without full commitment, but travel to Houston for Pool B play could be a factor. “We’re trying,” Hill confirmed.
  • Javier Báez: Báez, a key contributor to Puerto Rico’s 2023 run, is confirmed to participate again. His versatility, including experience playing center field, provides manager Yadier Molina with valuable lineup flexibility.
  • Gleyber Torres: Torres is expected to represent Venezuela once more, with former Tigers legends Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez serving as coaches. Pitcher Keider Montero is also a potential candidate.
  • Jahmai Jones: Jones has expressed interest in playing for Team Korea, honoring his mother’s Korean heritage.
  • Three Cruz: Tigers prospect Three Cruz has indicated interest in playing for Team Canada, leveraging his birth in Toronto and his father’s baseball history with the city.
  • Hao-Yu Lee: The Tigers’ No. 6 prospect, Hao-Yu Lee, has garnered interest from Chinese Taipei, with the manager expressing enthusiasm for his talent. “We’ve followed Hao-Yu’s accomplishments for many years,” the manager said through a translator. “We know about his abilities. He’s good and talented. We tried to recruit him, and we will be so happy to have him.”

As the World Baseball Classic draws closer, the decision facing Riley Greene remains a significant storyline, balancing national pride, team needs, and individual career goals.
