Tigers Third Baseman: MLB Rankings Rise

by Liam O'Connor

Detroit Tigers fans have reason for optimism, and it starts with a revamped pitching staff. The Tigers, after a measured start to free agency, significantly bolstered their rotation with the signings of Framber Valdez and, crucially, Justin Verlander.

The addition of those two pitchers joins a rotation already featuring Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize, creating a formidable group on the mound. But the potential for a successful 2026 season isn’t limited to pitching; the Tigers also have promising young talent blossoming throughout their lineup.

  • The Tigers’ starting rotation now boasts significant depth and experience.
  • Colt Keith, a rising third baseman, is drawing attention for his potential.
  • Detroit is banking on continued improvement from its young core.

According to Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, one player to watch is 24-year-old infielder Colt Keith, who currently ranks 14th among all third basemen in MLB preseason rankings. He edges out Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies (No. 15) and sits just behind Brendan Donovan of the Seattle Mariners (No. 13).

Keith was originally selected by the Tigers in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB draft (132nd overall) and made his major league debut in May 2024. During his rookie year, he posted a .260 batting average, a .309 on-base percentage, and a .380 slugging percentage, with 13 home runs across 148 games, resulting in a .689 OPS.

His 2025 campaign showed further progress, as he finished the year with a .256 average, .333 on-base percentage, and a .413 slugging percentage, good for a .746 OPS in 137 games. While not a dominant slash line, his consistent improvements are evident and have pleased the Detroit organization.

Keith has demonstrated versatility, playing first base, second base, third base, and serving as a designated hitter. Now, he has the opportunity to solidify his role at third base and potentially have a breakout season in 2026.

He’s a reliable player at the plate and defensively, and now needs the chance to settle into a consistent role and continue to develop his game.

Keith represents a promising young infielder with considerable talent and potential. While currently ranked 14th by Reuter, continued momentum could see him climb in future rankings.
