A new study reveals that strategically crafted tiktok videos can substantially increase young adults’ willingness to consider becoming stem cell donors, offering a novel approach to addressing critical shortages and racial disparities in life-saving treatments.
A recent collaboration between Canadian and U.S. researchers, with findings published in The Lancet Haematology, demonstrates the power of short-form video to engage a demographic crucial to expanding the donor pool. The research highlights the importance of entertainment value and authenticity in messaging aimed at potential donors aged 17 to 35.
addressing a Critical Need for Donors
Stem cell donation is a vital process for individuals battling blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases. However, finding suitable donors can be challenging, particularly for patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The Stem Cell Club, a student-led association with chapters across Canada dedicated to recruiting “young, healthy, diverse university students” as potential donors. The club aims to directly address the existing racial disparity in donor availability.
Decoding the TikTok Algorithm for Public Health
Researchers shared 30 TikTok videos promoting stem cell donation with 46 participants, all within the target age range. Following video exposure, focus groups were conducted to gather detailed feedback on what resonated with viewers. Participants, representing diverse backgrounds, reported spending a median of five hours per week on the platform. The study took place during 2021, a period of rapid growth for TikTok’s popularity.
The findings revealed a clear preference for videos that prioritized entertainment over explicit educational content. successful videos avoided any perception of moral superiority or condescension from those featured. Instead, they leveraged elements like fast-pacing, unexpected twists, and engaging visuals.
“TikToks increased participants’ conviction to participate,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “This effect ranged in intensity, with some sharing they were more agreeable or more likely to register, and others more concretely stating they would register or donate.”
Key Elements of Effective TikTok Campaigns
The study identified several key characteristics of TikTok videos that effectively captured the attention of young adults and motivated them to consider donation:
- Entertainment First: Prioritize engaging content over purely informational messaging.
- Authenticity is Crucial: Avoid appearing “fake,” “exceptionally happy,” or overly promotional, as this can raise suspicion.
- Brevity is Key: Capture attention within the first two to three seconds.
- Relatability Matters: Feature individuals from the same demographic as the target audience and incorporate current Generation Z trends and dances – used appropriately.
- Avoid condescension: Videos should not come across as arrogant or judgmental.
One participant emphasized the importance of brevity, noting that a video had only a few seconds to capture their attention before they scrolled past.
Implications for Public Health Interaction
Park believes the study’s findings have broad implications for public health organizations and government agencies seeking to engage young audiences. He emphasized the importance of “meeting them where they’re at” and adapting communication strategies to align with the preferences of this demographic.
“Young people are people. Young adults are adults,” Park stated. “They make up such a big portion of our population, and it’s very crucial to educate them, and meet them where they’re at.”
The publication of this research in The Lancet Haematology represents a significant achievement, particularly for a student-led initiative. “It’s a dream for anyone in medicine,” Park said.”I’ve done graduate school, so I no how hard it is to publish any paper. It’s a huge honor.”
This research was funded by the Stem Cell Club.
