In Lisbon, on the sidelines of a visit to the headquarters of the CPLP, the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries, the head of Timorese diplomacy, Benvindo dos Santos Freitas, assured that he was monitoring the Guinean situation. “For Timor-Leste and also for the community [dos Países de Língua Portuguesa] It is a worrying situation. We want there to be a situation that returns to normality in which there will be peace and respect for the rights of the Democratic Rule of Law and the functioning of democratic institutions”, defended.

East Timor showed concern about the situation in Guinea-Bissau, which has been without a parliament for two months. The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, dissolved parliament at the beginning of December, dissolving the PAI-Terra Ranka majority government to create a new government of presidential initiative, despite the Constitution preventing dissolution within 12 months at legislative elections, which took place in June 2023.

The head of Timorese diplomacy, Benvindo dos Santos Freitas, added that the situation in Guinea-Bissau is “a delicate and worrying situation”. “We are all following the news. We all also have to think about an idea, a way out. How can we all support together to bring a solution to the situation in Guinea-Bissau”, concluded.

Since January, the Ministry of the Interior has banned demonstrations in public spaces across the country, justifying ongoing search and seizure operations for firearms in Guinea-Bissau.
