Timothy Busfield: Child Abuse Trial & Jail Release – US News

Timothy Busfield Released From Jail Pending Trial on Child Sex Abuse Charges

A New Mexico judge has ordered the release of actor Timothy Busfield from jail while he awaits a potential trial on charges of child sex abuse. The 68-year-old Emmy Award-winning actor is accused of inappropriate contact with two boys on a television series set.

Prosecutors allege Busfield groomed and sexually abused the children. Deputy District Attorney Savannah Brandenburg-Koch told the court the allegations were “specific and not exaggerated,” and expressed concern over potential witness fear of retaliation and professional repercussions.

Busfield Maintains Innocence, Lawyers Argue No Flight Risk

Busfield, known for roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” previously dismissed the accusations as “lies.” He first appeared in court last week via video link, facing two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse.

At a hearing in Albuquerque on Tuesday, Busfield appeared in handcuffs and an orange prison jumpsuit. His legal team successfully argued he did not pose a danger to the community and should not be incarcerated while awaiting trial. The defense suggested the allegations stemmed from a dispute over the replacement of child actors on the series, alleging a potential act of revenge by the parents.

Judge Cites Lack of Prior Similar Allegations

Judge David Murphy acknowledged the serious nature of the accusations, stating the alleged crimes are “inherently dangerous and involve children.” However, he determined prosecutors had not proven the public would be unsafe if Busfield were released.

“There’s no evidence of a pattern of criminal conduct, there are no similar allegations involving children in his past,” the judge stated. He further emphasized that Busfield “self-surrendered and submitted himself to this court’s jurisdiction, demonstrating compliance with the court order for his arrest.”

Melissa Gilbert Supports Husband During Court Appearance

Actor Melissa Gilbert, Busfield’s wife and best known for her role as Laura Ingalls in the 1970s/80s television series “Little House on the Prairie,” was present in court during the hearing. Following the ruling, Gilbert publicly thanked the judge for the decision.

The case remains ongoing, and Busfield’s future legal proceedings have not yet been scheduled. .
