Tinnitus: how to explain and treat it?

Tinnitus is noise (hissing, crackling, buzzing) which constitutes auditory impressions, it does not reflect an external sound and can be temporary or persistent. They concern nearly one in four adults, and can have a very variable impact in terms of quality of life.

How to explain that the person who suffers from tinnitus is the only one to hear this noise which can become annoying, even obsessive? Is there a link between tinnitus and hearing loss?
