According to the Emirati newspaper “Al-Bayan”, Dr. Jamal Al-Jubeh, a pediatric endocrinology and diabetes consultant, explains that diabetes in children is often type 1, and this means that they receive treatment with insulin injections, whether after each meal or once during the day, or through pumps, and with With the presence of modern methods for treating diabetes, it has become possible to deal with the first type with greater flexibility when fasting, but the matter requires controls, such as commitment to taking insulin injections, whether by injection or pump, and secondly, reducing insulin for patients who use the multiple injection option.
Dr. Al-Jubeh continued that the dose is usually long-term; So that insulin does not affect the measurement of blood sugar during fasting, in addition to reducing the dose so that the patient does not suffer from low blood sugar during fasting, provided that the same dose is raised after breakfast or what follows it; To counter the expected increase in carbohydrate and sweet intake.
He stressed that sick children who use an insulin pump must reduce doses between noon and sunset. To avoid a drop in blood sugar during this period, continue fasting without problems.
He pointed out that the patient is vulnerable to a drop in blood sugar during fasting, and to a rise in blood sugar after breakfast, and medical adjustments help prevent complications. If a drop occurs in a diabetic patient while fasting, he must break his fast immediately. Because this matter poses a threat to his life, with the importance of communicating with the medical team.
