President Donald Trump has nominated his former personal attorney, Todd Blanche, to serve as U.S. Attorney General.
The transition of Todd Blanche from defense counsel to the top law enforcement officer in the country represents a central pillar of Donald Trump’s plan to reform the Department of Justice (DOJ). Blanche, 51, previously represented Trump in the New York hush money trial and has been a fixture in the president’s legal defense strategy.
During a recent confirmation hearing, the tension was palpable as senators questioned whether Blanche could operate independently of the man who hired him.
Senate Confirmation and the Cornyn Factor
Blanche’s confirmation hinges on a razor-thin margin. Because Democrats are expected to reject the nomination en bloc, a single Republican vote against Blanche could sink the nomination.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas has emerged as the decisive figure. Cornyn, who remains in office until January 3, 2027, has expressed hesitation. During the July 15 hearing, Cornyn pressed Blanche on the validity of a controversial government fund and later told reporters he was still not decided on his vote.
Controversy Over the ‘Anti-Weaponization’ Fund

Blanche’s handling of the fund was described by some as turbulent; he initially defended it before Congress, only to later reveal it would be dismantled following bipartisan backlash and a closed-door meeting with legislators.
Management of the Jeffrey Epstein Files
Blanche has also had to defend the DOJ’s transparency regarding the files of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This effort began after Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act following pressure from Congress. As acting attorney general, Blanche oversaw the publication of documents in which the president is mentioned more than 1,000 times.
During his testimony, Blanche admitted to technical failures in the redaction process but framed the overall effort as a victory for transparency.

This perceived loyalty comes at a time of internal crisis within the DOJ. Reports indicate the department has been emptied of staff due to mass firings and resignations, with more than 1,200 former department members speaking out against Blanche’s nomination.
Blanche maintains that his leadership is necessary to fix a system he claims was weaponized against the president and other political figures during the previous administration.
