Middle East conflict

Written by Bettina Nemes

The international community must act together to avoid an escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said this on Tuesday at a joint meeting of the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Muscat, Oman.

Responsible behavior is required as the situation could easily lead to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Szijjártó underlined that GCC member states can play an important role to avoid escalation. The intervention of the six countries has had several positive and stabilizing effects in various regional conflicts in the past. He expressed the hope that this time again the world could count on the stabilizing and mediating efforts of the Gulf States, as this can contribute to resolving the crisis and thus improving the security situation in Europe. Cooperation between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council can be a very important tool in resolving humanitarian crises around the world.

Szijjártó also pointed out that Europe is facing serious security challenges due to the war in Ukraine and increasing migratory pressure, and that Hungary is at the intersection of these two problems. “We all know that armed conflicts, wars and the growing threat of terrorism are the main causes of migration flows. And the global security situation has a direct impact on migration pressure on the EU.”
