Egypt Braces for Significant Temperature Drop, Potential Flooding and Storms on Wednesday

A widespread drop in temperatures is forecast across Egypt on Wednesday, December 10, with potential for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even hailstorms in several regions. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for challenging weather conditions, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and in northern parts of the country.

Widespread Cooling Trend

The General Authority of Meteorology anticipates cool weather will prevail throughout the day, beginning with a chilly start in the early morning and continuing into the night. Active winds will exacerbate the feeling of cold in many areas. This cooling trend represents a significant shift from recent conditions and requires residents to adjust accordingly.

Visibility Concerns and Rainfall Forecast

Reduced visibility is expected due to water mist forming on roads leading to and from northern Egypt, extending as far south as Greater Cairo, northern Upper Egypt, and central Sinai, beginning around 4:09 am.

The most significant weather event will be the anticipated rainfall. Moderate to heavy, and potentially thundery, rain is expected in the governorates of Alexandria, Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Damietta, Port Said, Gharbia, Menoufia, and Sharqia. Canal cities are also at risk of flooding in areas of Sinai, with intermittent rainfall expected.

Lighter, but still impactful, showers are also forecast for Greater Cairo, the Gulf of Suez, North Upper Egypt, and parts of Matrouh Governorate.

Hazardous Wind Conditions and Maritime Impacts

Wind activity is expected across most of Egypt, intermittently disrupting maritime navigation along the Mediterranean coast. Specifically, areas from Matrouh to Alamein, Alexandria to Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh to Damietta, Port Said to Al-Arish will experience wind speeds between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour, with wave heights reaching 2 to 3 meters. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution.

Severe Weather Warnings: Hail, Lightning, and Strong Winds

A senior official warned that thunderclouds, with a 40% probability, could bring a range of hazards. These include the possibility of hailstones, strong downdrafts creating dangerous wind gusts, and the risk of lightning strikes. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms.

Regional Temperature Outlook

The Meteorological Authority has provided detailed temperature forecasts for key cities:

  • Cairo: High of 19°C (66°F), Low of 13°C (55°F)
  • Alexandria: High of 19°C (66°F), Low of 12°C (54°F)
