It’s no secret that the publication of the ten best sportsmen of the year in our country has always caused complaints among athletes, coaches, sports fans and sports journalists who participated in the voting, although the latter make the choice.
In order to avoid tens of years of grievances and exclude a differentiated approach, this year the RA Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs tried to fill the gap that was causing public dissatisfaction.
For this purpose, on November 8, an announcement was made on the official website of the Ministry that sports organizations and sports journalists are invited to participate in the discussions aimed at establishing the criteria for evaluating sports results in Olympic and non-Olympic sports developed by the RA Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The preliminary list of the evaluation of athletes participating in team and individual sports was also presented, regarding which the written suggestions and comments of the interested parties were received. Then, at the end of November, a meeting of sports journalists, coaches and presidents of a number of federations was held in the ministry. The last one was hot, as a result of intense discussions, it was found that some sports journalists and representatives of the Sports Journalists Federation of Armenia (SJF) were against the proposals of the ministry and preferred to maintain and continue the 55-year-old formed and “baked” tradition.
Moreover. there were journalists who even tried to accuse the ministry of imposing an opinion or that they only had to perform arithmetic operations with the proposed criteria. Nevertheless, they wanted the ministry to propose an extended list of athletes, and they would vote.
The procedure established by the Ministry regarding the voting of the top ten, the list of candidates for the best athletes, the information on the evaluation criteria were posted on the official website of the Ministry on December 13. At the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, until December 18, at 18:00, the acceptance of proposals for the ten best sportsmen of the year continued.
While the proposals of sports journalists were coming to the ministry, the other day, the HMLF published the names of the athletes included in its top ten athletes of the year, which was also recognized by the National Olympic Committee.
