‘Tótem’, by Lila Avilés, joins the Criterion Collection

Totemthe latest film by the Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilesrecent winner of five Ariel Awards, has been released in a prestigious version for the Criterion Collection.

The film, released in 2023, starring Naíma Sentíes, Montserrat Marañón, Marisol Gasé and Mateo García Elizondo, among others, was released by Janus Contemporary on September 11, on Blu-ray and DVD, to be part of the collection in association with Criterion, which corresponds to the same version that was screened in theaters.

The synopsis accompanying this new physical version of the film states:

“In a bustling Mexican household, seven-year-old Sol is caught up in a whirlwind of preparations for her terminally ill father’s birthday party, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives. As the day becomes an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol and her family begin to understand the gravity of this year’s celebration. Lila Avilés directs a dynamic cast in this stunning sophomore effort, a warmly observed, poignantly funny and emotionally expansive study of the ways we cope with grief.”

This new version, as reported by Criterion through its X account, includes a new interview with the director of The Chambermaid (2018), as well as the trailer for the film, which can be seen in a 1:33:1 format.

They also add that:

“Avilés directs a dynamic cast in this astonishing sophomore effort—a warm, poignantly funny and emotionally expansive study of the ways we deal with grief.”

In addition to Totem (2023), films such as Canoa (1975, Felipe Cazals), Cronos (1993, Guillermo del Toro), Amores Perros (2001, Alejandro G. Iñarritu) and Roma (2018, Alfonso Cuarón) are also in Criterion’s Mexico collection.

Lila Avilés’ film is now available for purchase on the Criterion Collection’s official website and for viewing on the collection’s official streaming channel.
