Turkey’s Tourism Sector Surges, Reaching $50 Billion in First Nine Months of 2025

Turkey’s tourism industry continues its remarkable ascent, achieving a record $50 billion in revenue through the first nine months of 2025, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). This represents a 5.7% increase compared to the $47.3 billion earned during the same period last year, signaling a sustained recovery and growing appeal for international travelers.

Climbing the Global Tourism Ranks

The country has demonstrably improved its position in the global tourism landscape. A senior official stated, “We have left Italy behind in 2024, rising to the fourth place in the tourism league.” This advancement underscores Turkey’s increasing competitiveness and strategic investments in attracting visitors.

Key Performance Indicators: Visitors and Spending

The number of tourists visiting Turkey also saw a positive trend, reaching 49.993 million in the first nine months of 2025 – a 1.6% increase from the 49.181 million recorded last year. This growth is further bolstered by increased visitor spending. Personal expenses accounted for $15.975 billion, while package tour expenses totaled $8.71 billion. Total tourism income, including revenue from transfer passengers ($211 million), reached $24.46 billion from visitors alone during the July-September quarter, a 3.9% increase year-over-year, totaling $24.257 billion.

Rising Per Capita Spending Fuels Growth

A significant driver of the revenue increase is the rising per capita expenditure. In 2017, the average nightly spend per visitor was $83. This figure climbed to $107 in 2024 and has now reached $116 in the first nine months of 2025, representing a 9% increase. This demonstrates a shift towards higher-value tourism and a willingness among visitors to spend more during their stays.

Optimism for Year-End Targets

Looking ahead, officials are confident in achieving the ambitious year-end target of $64 billion. Preliminary data from October indicates continued positive momentum, with final figures expected to be released by the end of November. “We can say that we will achieve our year-end target of $64 billion,” a spokesperson confirmed.
