Tourism to scarcity – El Comercio

In human history, hardship, hunger and poverty have been a constant in all cultures and civilizations. Humanity has depended on gathering, hunting, fishing and later on limited agriculture, vulnerable to adverse climatic conditions that, like an invisible dagger, decimated entire populations with relentless droughts and floods.

The lack of effective methods of food storage and preservation left communities unable to accumulate surpluses in times of prosperity, and poor harvests gave way to devastating famines.

The Industrial Revolution beginning in the 18th century, with its roaring machinery and new techniques, marked a vital change in food production. However, it was not until the 20th century, with the spread of industrialization and globalization, that food became accessible to the masses across the planet.

Capitalism, despite the hatred that is sown, emerged as the heroic protagonist, driving productivity and innovation in agriculture. Large-scale production and efficient distribution led to the creation of affordable food, rescuing millions of souls from the deadly embrace of hunger. Food security is the most brilliant achievement of capitalism.

They cannot overshadow the fact that capitalism has been the architect of abundance, raising the quality of life of multitudes and financing, through taxes, the own plans of those who criticize it. But in Ecuador, this picture is distorted.

Heavier tax burdens on industries that produce food that should be affordable turns it into a luxury that only a few can afford.

While in Europe the family basket is paid for with half the money than in Ecuador, here, taxes deny the possibility of access to basic foods to more and more sectors of the population.

In the midst of the war against narcoterrorism, the left calls for more taxes on industries, increasing the price of food and throwing the most vulnerable into a spiral of scarcity. A repetition of ancient history, where the masses depended on their masters to survive, a model resurrected by the left with an obese State that distributes crumbs to its followers and denies sustenance to its critics.

The reduction of the Ecuadorian State, insatiable and corrupt, emerges as a more sensible alternative than raising the cost of food through taxes, plunging a large part of the population into survival mode, stalking those who always enjoy abundance, precisely the bureaucrats who create this sea of taxes that lead us to misery.
