Towards the repatriation of members of Burundian armed groups

The Chief of Military Staff at the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi and coordinator of the repatriation process, Lieutenant General Silas Ntigurirwa, said that the workshop will outline the practical arrangements for voluntary repatriation of members of armed groups who are still at home. Asked when the actual repatriation will begin, Lieutenant General Silas Ntigurirwa said that the precise date is not yet known but that during this workshop, the participants will reflect on different themes to determine a duly thought-out schedule so that we can know when the first elements can be repatriated.

The representative of the office of the special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Great Lakes region, Serigne Bassirou Dienne indicates that this workshop marks the decisive step on the path to stability and lasting peace not only for Burundi and the DRC, but also for the entire Great Lakes region.

According to Serigne Bassirou Dienne, Burundi’s commitment to addressing the complex issue of repatriation and reintegration of members of Burundian armed groups operating in the east of the DRC demonstrates the determination to promote peace, security and social cohesion.

“The United Nations, through the office of the special envoy for the Great Lakes region, MONUSCO, the country team in Burundi and our partners on the ground will remain firmly committed to your side to support this process until its conclusion. term. » suggested the representative of the office of the special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Great Lakes region.

The national coordinator of the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (P-DDRCS) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. William Kapuku Bwabwa, stressed that the Government of his country, through the program under his responsibility, provides all its support to the process. formalization of a legal framework for repatriation and reintegration.

The P-DDRCS coordinator says he is satisfied to see the establishment of a legal framework which will contribute to the reduction of combatants. According to William Kapuku Bwabwa, this effort meets the national strategy of the fight for disarmament, demobilization, community reintegration and stabilization of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This workshop involves the participation of different stakeholders in repatriation and security in Burundi, DRC, Uganda, Tanzania as well as representatives of international and regional organizations who support this process.
