The UFC-Que Choisir association alerts parents, Thursday August 25. Potentially dangerous components are found in many school supplies.
Ballpoint pens, pencils, colors or highlighters, some of these back-to-school essentials are actually toxic. According to a study by the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir, they contain endocrine disruptors or allergens. Ballpoint pens of six brands are particularly concerned, composed of probable carcinogenic materials. No mention of the risk is made on the packaging.
Objects handled daily by children are not subject to any regulations. So, the UFC-Que Choisir association wants a new standard. “There are no specific regulations to date on school supplies, and therefore it is up to the manufacturer to affix the danger logos when justified, or to finally not register anything at all. What we are asking for is specific regulations that apply to school supplies“, comments Elisabeth Chesnais, journalist for UFC-Que Choisir.
