Toyota Hilux: Next-Gen Model Electrifies Pickup segment, But Challenges Remain in India

Toyota’s Hilux isn’t a top-seller in India, but it consistently generates buzz among enthusiasts drawn to its ruggedness and reliability – qualities often in short supply in the Indian market. The recent proclamation of a next-generation Hilux with an all-electric powertrain has further amplified the conversation, sparking excitement and raising key questions about its potential success.
The Hilux has long benefited from a unique position in the Indian automotive landscape. Its robust build quality, dependable engine, and limited competition have all contributed to its appeal. Now, Toyota is poised to disrupt the segment further with a bold move towards electrification.
A Modernized design for a New Era
The first thing drivers will notice in the new-generation Hilux is its updated aesthetic. the vehicle boasts a sleeker, more contemporary design, featuring a refined LED headlight setup with integrated daytime running lights (drls). ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) models receive a honeycomb-pattern grille, complemented by two prominent side air vents and bold cladding for an aggressive stance.
The electric version distinguishes itself with a closed-off front panel, signaling its zero-emission powertrain. While wheel sizes and cladding options vary across models, the side profile remains largely unchanged. The rear gate incorporates vertically oriented taillamps,C-shaped LED DRLs,and the embossed “TOYOTA” lettering. According to observers,the revamped front fascia is particularly appealing to younger buyers.
The Arrival of an Electric Powertrain
Toyota is accelerating its electrification strategy, and the hilux is now at the forefront of this effort in the pickup segment. For the first time, the Hilux is available with a fully electric powertrain, powered by a 59.2 kWh battery. This battery pack powers both the front (205Nm) and rear (268.6Nm) motors, delivering true all-wheel-drive capability.
Built on the same robust IMV body-on-frame platform as the traditional Hilux, the electric version promises to maintain the pickup’s renowned build quality and off-road prowess. While the added weight of the battery may slightly alter driving dynamics, the core Hilux experience should remain largely intact. The battery is strategically positioned below the rear seats.
A Tech-Forward Interior
Beyond the exterior updates, Toyota has substantially revamped the Hilux’s cabin. The interior now features two prominent 12.3-inch screens dominating the dashboard. A redesigned center console incorporates physical buttons – a welcome departure from touch-sensitive controls – for ease of use.
looking further ahead, Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain in 2028. This prototype utilizes a polymer-electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) stack with a power output of 174 hp and stores hydrogen in three high-pressure tanks, each with a capacity of approximately 2.6kg, achieving a driving range of around 600 kilometers.
Potential Roadblocks: Range, Payload, and Price
Despite the exciting advancements, several factors could hinder the Hilux’s success.The electric Hilux exhibits a reduced payload capacity (715kg vs. 1000kg) and towing capacity (1600kg vs. 3500kg) compared to its ICE counterparts. Critically, the claimed range of the EV (barely over 240 kilometers on the WLTP cycle) could be a dealbreaker for buyers expecting more from a premium lifestyle pickup.
Currently, the Toyota Hilux ranges in price from Rs. 28 lakhs (STD variant) to Rs. 35 lakhs (High AT variant). Despite recent discounts, it remains positioned above the most popular segment in India.There is concern that the electric version could debut at an even higher price point, making it difficult to compete with other aggressively priced EVs. Discounts will likely be crucial to driving sales. The Indian launch date for the ninth-generation Hilux remains unconfirmed, but a debut in the near future is anticipated.
