Traffic Chaos: Accidents and Viaduct Flooding on E18 near Köping and Västerås

by time news

Just before midnight, two cars collided at the height of the Strö traffic area outside Köping. For the two cars and the drivers, there were no major injuries, but the culprit in the drama was large pools of water under the viaduct. Shortly after, the decision was made to shut down E18 in both directions.

– There is still a lot of water at the viaduct, says Magnus Bengtsson, commanding officer at Rescue Center Mitt.

– Water has flowed in from the sides. The assessment is made that the cars cannot drive through the pools of water under the viaduct.

A forecast is set for 12 o’clock on Saturday by the Swedish Transport Administration. In the meantime, traffic is diverted via roads 580 and 250 towards Köping.

“Extremely lame”

At 8.30 on Saturday morning, a new accident occurred on the E18, now west of Västerås, involving four cars and a truck. Ambulance was on site at 9 o’clock to attend to those involved.

– Reportedly extremely slippery at the site. It is unclear if anyone was hurt, says Marie Nordahl, management operator at Rescue Center Mitt.

Here, too, the E18 was closed while the scene was cleared by the emergency services, in the direction of Västerås. Since half past ten, the road is open again to traffic.
