A female passenger died after a serious accident at the Šumava Rally. During the crash in the opening special stage, she suffered injuries from which she subsequently succumbed in hospital. Regional police spokesman Ondřej Hodan informed about it.

After the death of navigator Alena Krejčíková, the organizers suspended the opening event of the Czech championship and later ended it prematurely. They informed about it on their Facebook profile.

“Based on the tragic event, the organizing committee, after consulting with the crews, decided to end the 58th edition early. The organizing committee expresses its sincere condolences to all the survivors,” they said.

Krejčíková, who was driving a Subaru Impreza Sti with Jaroslav Krejčík, according to the spokesperson of the Pilsen rescue service, Mária Svobodová, suffered very serious injuries and was transported by air to the University Hospital Pilsen – Lochotín, unconscious and with her airway secured after resuscitation.

But she eventually succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

“Unfortunately, at 12:30 p.m. today at the Šumava Rally, another traffic accident occurred during the special stage. Near the village of Strážov, a Czech driver born in 1979 with a Subaru Impreza drove the vehicle off the track into a field for reasons that have not yet been determined,” said a police spokesman. Rally participants completed only three of the six planned measured sections today, after which Václav Pech was in the lead. Four more stages were to be run on Sunday. After the unfortunate event, the competitors were not interested in continuing.

“Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident. We decided to react immediately by withdrawing from the competition. We don’t want any points,” Jan Kopecký, ten-time national champion, told Czech Television.

The fatal accident marked the home rally championship after almost 11 years. In October 2013, co-driver Jan Jinderle junior died in an accident at the Příbram Rally. A year later, driver Miloš Vágner died at the Krkonoše Rally, which was run as a free competition.
