Teh court heard harrowing details of the February 16, 2024, incident, which began with Craig engaging in conversation with passengers while intoxicated on a train departing Glasgow Queen Street railway station, bound for Perth. within ten minutes, the interaction turned violent when Craig hurled an insult at one of the men before launching a savage assault, striking the victim twice in the head with a glass bottle.
The initial attack prompted the victim to flee through the train carriage, but Craig relentlessly pursued him, continuing the assault until the bottle shattered, leaving the man holding the perilous broken neck. When the victim’s friend attempted to intervene,he too became a target.
Life-Threatening Injuries Sustained
Craig then turned his attention to the friend, delivering seven punches before twice plunging the jagged edge of the broken bottle into his chest.The victim suffered a stab wound near his heart, a collapsed lung, and a severed artery, resulting in the loss of approximately 15% of his blood. He was rushed to intensive care, his life hanging in the balance.
Following the attack on the friend, Craig returned to his seat and discarded the bottle neck in the direction of the victims. He then proceeded to steal one of the victim’s phones and attempted to conceal evidence by removing his blood-soaked jumper and replacing it with a clean hoodie.
Arrest and Investigation
Police and paramedics intercepted the train at Larbert railway station, where Craig was arrested. Both victims received immediate medical attention and were transported to the hospital for urgent treatment.
According to Detective inspector Marc francey of the British Transport Police, Craig “violently and relentlessly attacked two men over a minor disagreement,” causing widespread panic among fellow passengers. he emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse, stating, “It is thanks only to luck and to the life-saving work of the paramedics that Craig hasn’t been found guilty of something far worse.”
Francey concluded, “I hope this verdict brings a measure of closure to the victims after enduring such a brutal attack.” He affirmed that violence on the railway is “utterly unacceptable” and pledged continued efforts to bring offenders like Craig to justice.
