Armed Officers Arrest Two After Multiple Stabbings on Train Near Huntingdon

A harrowing scene unfolded on Saturday evening as armed officers apprehended two men following reports of multiple stabbings aboard a train near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The incident, which prompted a “large-scale response” from emergency services, occurred at approximately 7:40 PM, leaving several individuals hospitalized and disrupting rail travel across the region.

Train Stopped, Suspects Apprehended

The train, traveling from Newcastle to King’s Cross, was brought to a halt at Huntingdon station after police received calls reporting the attacks. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the arrest of two men at the scene and stated that a number of those injured have been transported to area hospitals for treatment. Video footage circulating online, purportedly filmed from a railway bridge, depicts a significant police presence, with armed officers converging on the train carriages.

Passengers Describe Chaotic Scene

Witness accounts paint a picture of panic and fear as passengers attempted to escape the unfolding violence. One passenger, identified as Gavin, recounted to Sky News seeing individuals fleeing through his carriage, shouting, “They’ve got a knife, I’ve been stabbed.” He described the victims as “extremely bloodied” and collapsing on the floor as the train arrived at the station.

“They were making their way through the carriage to get away from the suspects,” Gavin stated. “That person ended up collapsing on the floor. They were taken to an ambulance pretty much straight away.”

Gavin further reported witnessing one of the suspects fleeing the train and “running rampant” while brandishing a large knife before being subdued by responding officers. Passengers were subsequently ushered off the train and into the station.

Travel Disruption and Ongoing Investigation

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced significant disruptions to service on the East Coast Mainline, with all lines blocked around Huntingdon station. The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day. Authorities have also closed the A1307 road approaching the town center as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a statement, Cambridgeshire Police confirmed they were alerted to the incident at 7:39 PM. “Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested,” the statement read. “A number of people have been taken to hospital. The incident remains ongoing and the A1307 has been closed as you approach the town centre.”

Political Response and Public Safety

The incident has drawn swift reactions from political leaders. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the event as “deeply concerning” and expressed gratitude to the emergency services. The Home Secretary echoed these sentiments, urging the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp characterized the incident as a “brutal mass attack” and called for an immediate update from police and the government.

Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty stated he was “aware of the incident” and working to gather more information, adding, “My thoughts are with the victims and those involved.”

This is a developing story. Further details will be published as they become available.
