Nine Inch Nails and Foo Fighters’ Drummer Shuffle: A Story of Timing and Camaraderie

A surprising series of events led to a perceived “drummer swap” between Nine Inch Nails and Foo Fighters this summer, but the story, as told by Trent Reznor, is far more nuanced than a simple trade. The industrial rock band’s frontman detailed the timeline of Ilan Rubin’s departure and Josh Freese’s return, revealing a decision rooted in practicality and a desire for band cohesion.

The Unexpected Shift

At the end of July, news broke that Ilan Rubin had left Nine Inch Nails to join Foo Fighters, with the band swiftly announcing Josh Freese as his replacement. Freese, a previous member of NIN from 2005 to 2008, had been released from his role with Dave Grohl’s band earlier in 2023 after joining them in 2023. This sequence sparked speculation of a deliberate exchange, a notion both Reznor and Freese have now dispelled.

Nine Inch Nails was recently named time.news’ 2025 Live Act of the Year for their acclaimed “Peel It Back” tour. In a recent interview, Reznor explained the reasoning behind his decision to allow Rubin to move on prior to the band’s 2025 North American tour, even though Rubin could have completed that leg before fully committing to Foo Fighters.

Reznor’s Perspective: A Matter of Timing and Intent

“The reality of that scenario was it was a surprise to me that Ilan was joining the Foo Fighters,” Reznor stated. He acknowledged Rubin’s talent and contributions during his time with NIN, but highlighted the logistical challenge his departure presented. The band faced a choice: replace Rubin immediately following the European leg of the tour in early summer 2025, or wait until after the North American leg later that summer, potentially scrambling to find a replacement during the holiday season.

Reznor continued, “As soon as I heard the news, I thought I could call Josh and he could play the show tonight, ’cause there’s no doubt about his ability.” He emphasized the ease and logic of bringing Freese back into the fold. “He was available and willing, and it just made sense on a number of levels. Being completely honest, we’re adults and we’re professional, but we’re also people with emotional feelings and a sense of camaraderie and intent and purpose. I thought it would feel better to play that last wave of tours with someone that wants to be there, and that’s what went down.”

Freese: Purely Coincidental

Josh Freese corroborated Reznor’s account, clarifying that the situation was not a planned “drummer swap.” Speaking with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation, Freese explained, “It’s funny because it’s just coincidence the way it worked out. It’s not like there was a purposeful drum swap.” He added that Reznor would have reached out regardless of the circumstances. “And, actually, if Ilan…if he left Nine Inch Nails to go join—pick a band—Muse, I don’t know, Trent would’ve called me. It’s not like it was an intentional swap. It’s like when Trent needed a drummer, when Ilan split, he was, like, ‘Well, I’m gonna call Freese.’ And he called me and I was, like, ‘Hell yeah.’”
