Tripoli Launches Emergency Fund Following Deadly Building Collapses
A new emergency fund has been established in Tripoli, Lebanon, to address the urgent need to reinforce crumbling buildings and assess structural damage following a series of recent collapses. The initiative, announced by Tripoli’s Mayor Abdul Hamid Karima, aims to provide immediate support and prevent further tragedies in the city.
The fund’s creation comes after a particularly devastating week in Tripoli, marked by the collapse of four buildings. These incidents resulted in a significant loss of life, with 15 fatalities and 8 injuries reported as of Sunday. The Lebanese city is now mobilizing resources to address the underlying issues contributing to the structural failures.
Addressing a Crisis of Infrastructure
According to a statement released by the Mayor’s office, the emergency fund will prioritize two key objectives: strengthening damaged buildings and conducting a comprehensive engineering survey of structures throughout the city. This survey will be carried out under the supervision of the Engineers Syndicate, ensuring a professional and thorough assessment of the risks.
“After the collapse of four buildings in our city, and the fall of martyrs and wounded, and after the intervention of the state with its various agencies, today we are launching an emergency fund to strengthen the damaged buildings and conduct a comprehensive engineering survey,” a senior official stated.
Transparency and Oversight
The fund will operate with a commitment to accountability, managed through clear and transparent mechanisms. Three specialized committees will oversee its operations: a Governance Committee, a Finance Committee, and an Engineering Supervision Committee. This multi-layered structure is intended to ensure responsible allocation of resources and effective project management.
“The fund will be managed according to clear and transparent mechanisms through 3 specialized committees: the Governance Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Engineering Supervision Committee,” the Mayor explained.
Call for Collective Action
Mayor Karima has issued a plea for support from all those with ties to Tripoli, including residents, friends, and members of the Tripoli diaspora. He emphasized the importance of collective action in overcoming the current crisis and safeguarding the city and its inhabitants.
“We call on all Tripoli lovers, friends, and expatriates to cooperate and contribute to overcoming this crisis and protecting the city and its people,” he urged.
Further details regarding the fund, including specific donation mechanisms and participation steps, are expected to be released on Monday. This announcement will provide the public with a clear pathway to contribute to the rebuilding and stabilization efforts in Tripoli.
