Western Australia Braces for Life-Threatening Cyclone Mitchell Landfall

A category three tropical cyclone is bearing down on Western Australia’s Pilbara coast, prompting urgent warnings for residents to seek shelter as Cyclone Mitchell intensifies. Cyclone Intensifies Near Karratha
The weather system, currently a category three cyclone, strengthened over warm ocean waters Sunday morning and is now positioned near the mining town of Karratha. Overnight, Karratha recorded wind gusts reaching 95km/h, though a full assessment of any resulting damage is still pending.
“Damaging to destructive winds are expected to ramp up in the next 24 hours,” a bureau forecaster stated Saturday. “Those winds are strong enough to bring down big branches or entire trees, damage property, and lead to power outages.”
Flash Flood and Coastal Surge Risks
Authorities are notably concerned about the risk of flash flooding across the central and west Pilbara coast throughout the weekend, with the west Gascoyne region also expected to be affected by Monday. In addition to the powerful winds, abnormally high tides pose a significant flood risk for the Karratha region in the early hours of Sunday and towards Onslow Sunday afternoon.
To support affected communities, evacuation centers have been established at the Karratha Leisureplex and a second location at the Onslow Multi Purpose center.residents are urged to utilize these facilities if their homes are not secure.
Pilbara Ports will provide an update regarding the reopening of terminals once it is safe to do so. The potential for wind gusts to reach up to 205 km/h in some areas, should Mitchell move closer than currently forecast, remains a serious concern, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Damaging gales are also expected to spread inland across the western Pilbara from Sunday night.
