Troy University’s “Sound of the South” to March in London’s New Year’s Day Parade
The Troy University “Sound of the South” Marching Band has received a prestigious invitation to perform in the London Parade and Festival on January 1, 2027, a rare honor extended to only two university bands annually. This marks a historic moment for the band, representing its first-ever international performance.
The London New Year’s Day Parade, held in Westminster, is a globally recognized event attracting a live audience exceeding 600,000 spectators and a potential television viewership of up to 600 million worldwide. Beyond the parade, the “Sound of the South” will also participate in the Festival Concert Series, performing at some of London’s most renowned music venues.
According to the Director of Bands, Dr. Mark Walker, this trip represents a transformative experience for the students. “Many of our students have not been out of the Southeast region; for these students to have the possibility to travel to London to perform, study, take in the culture and visit famous sites is a testament to their hard work and commitment to the band, Troy University, and to their education,” he stated.
The appeal of American marching bands to a London audience is especially strong. A senior parade official explained that “The thing that always comes out on top and the thing that is most popular with our audience in London on New Year’s Day is American marching bands.” He further elaborated that London lacks a comparable tradition, noting, “the reason is that London does not have anything with the splendor, the spectacular, glittering and terrific entertainment. We have lots of good musicians, of course, but we just don’t have marching bands.”
The band’s itinerary will extend beyond performances to include cultural immersion. Students will have the opportunity to explore iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels,Windsor Castle,and Oxford University,as well as enjoy a cruise on the River Thames.
Currently, the band is actively fundraising to offset travel and logistical expenses, aiming to make the trip accessible to all participating students.
