Trump Administration Rejects Iran Peace Plan Over Sanctions Demands

The Trump administration rejected an Iranian proposal to end the ongoing war, with UN ambassador Mike Waltz stating that Iranian negotiators demanded billions in sanctions relief upfront without proving good faith. Tehran insisted diplomacy remains the only solution, warning it is prepared to resume fighting while its key waterway remains blocked.

Fresh diplomatic overtures aimed at resolving the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz have stalled following sharp rebukes from Washington. The Trump administration rejected Iran’s peace plan proposed at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, setting off a fresh round of dueling public statements from American and Iranian officials over the weekend.

Mike Waltz Cites Upfront Demands and Broken Pacts

Appearing on television on Sunday, United Nations Ambassador Mike Waltz explained that the American refusal stemmed from what the administration viewed as unearned concessions demanded by Tehran. According to Waltz, Iranian negotiators were asking for everything up front, seeking immediate relief from a sweeping economic blockade designed to halt attacks on international shipping.

President Donald Trump reinforced that stance on Saturday, asserting that the push for an immediate agreement on the crucial waterway arose from military desperation. They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz strait immediately because they’re losing so badly, Trump said, adding that the United States maintained total control of the strait and was winning the conflict.

Washington also pointed to a prior diplomatic breakdown as evidence of untrustworthiness. Waltz referenced a failed 14-point framework agreement signed in Pakistan in June, noting that Iran immediately violated it by attacking international shipping in violation of international law. He added that 146 nations have joined the United States in condemning those maritime assaults.

Abbas Araghchi and Masoud Pezeshkian Outline Tehran’s Stance

Iranian leadership countered by placing the onus for continued diplomacy back onto the White House while maintaining readiness for renewed hostilities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on social media that any movement toward reopening the strategic waterway remained contingent on these conditions being met, insisting that only a negotiated solution could break the deadlock.

We are fully prepared for the war to be resumed. We stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war.

At the same time, Araghchi emphasized that his country had not abandoned peaceful channels, telling interviewers that it is up to President Trump to choose between conflict and talks. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed that dual message during an interview, affirming that Tehran was ready to discuss its nuclear program and other issues but would not accept bullying or coercion.

Managing Regional Targeting and International Pressure

Beyond the stalled peace plan, Waltz addressed unconfirmed intelligence assessments regarding foreign assistance provided to Iran for missile targeting against shipping lanes and regional American military bases. While declining to confirm specific leaked assessments, Waltz noted that President Trump had raised the issue with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping during the latter’s recent state visit to Washington, DC, as well as during a prior visit to China in May.

Waltz reported positive movement from those high-level discussions, pointing to readouts indicating that both Washington and Beijing agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon and must stop tolling or attacking international shipping.

Contradicted Timelines and Long-Term Objectives

Amid reports from other outlets suggesting the United States might resume bombing Iran following the federal midterm elections in November, Waltz pushed back directly. He dismissed those press reports and emphasized that the administration’s overarching strategy centers on preventing what he described as a terrorist organization within the government from acquiring atomic capabilities.

The president is looking to make not just this generation – but the next generation – safer by not allowing what is essentially a terrorist organization in [Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] that is controlling the levers of government and wants to march towards a nuclear weapon, Waltz stated, asserting that we’re not going to let the IRGC have a nuclear weapon, much less hold the world hostage with one.
