iPhone Duo Entry Could Dethrone Samsung as Biggest Foldable Brand

Apple’s entry into foldable devices with the iPhone Duo is accompanied by Google’s Android leadership praising Samsung’s established Galaxy Z Fold lineup.

The smartphone market is shifting as major players stake their claims in the foldable category. Apple recently entered this space with the iPhone Duo, a release that could dethrone Samsung as the world’s biggest foldable brand. Even with new high-end hardware entering the arena, executives and analysts believe sales of Android foldable phones will continue to climb. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo represent the pinnacle of modern smartphone technology, each catering to distinct user preferences and priorities. The video below from GregglesTV compares the two handsets.

Hardware Specifications and Design Philosophy: iPhone Duo Versus Galaxy Z Fold 8

Beneath their folding form factors, both flagship devices utilize expansive 7.6-inch OLED inner displays supporting up to 120Hz refresh rates and reaching peak outdoor brightness levels of 3,000 nits. Yet their structural execution diverges significantly. The iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple has designed the Duo so that its inner and outer displays share the same aspect ratio. This is intended to make the transition between the two screens more consistent when users open or close the phone. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 also features a 7.6-inch inner screen, but its cover display is slightly larger at 5.5 inches. Samsung instead uses a more square 4:3 inner display and a taller 10:16 cover screen, giving the two screens different shapes and use cases.

Durability and display engineering also reveal contrasting corporate strategies. One of Apple’s biggest display differentiators is its custom nano-texture finish. The inner Duo display consists of 10 ultra-thin layers and uses the nano-texture surface to reduce reflections and glare. Apple says the finish also contributes to making the fold less visually prominent. The company has developed a custom polymer for the nano-textured cover layer, which Apple says is 40% stiffer than materials typically used elsewhere. A scratch-resistant coating is also applied to the surface, and the under-display FaceTime camera means there is no visible camera cutout interrupting the inner screen. Samsung has taken a different approach with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Its main display uses an anti-reflective coating designed to improve visibility and reduce glare, particularly outdoors. Samsung has also placed a titanium layer beneath the display and strengthened the shock-absorbing layer to improve resistance to everyday impacts. The outer glass uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, while the rear is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Ergonomics, Connectivity, and Pricing Comparison

Day-to-day usability highlights notable differences in weight and profile. Weighing just 201 grams, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is significantly lighter than the iPhone Duo, which tips the scales at 254 grams. The Z Fold 8 also features a thinner profile, measuring 9.7mm compared to the iPhone Duo’s 11.3mm. These differences translate to a noticeable improvement in ergonomics during daily use, reducing hand fatigue for extended periods of work, gaming, or streaming.

Pricing positions both handsets firmly in the luxury tier. Price remains a significant consideration for many buyers, even in the high-end smartphone market. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced at $1,899, making it slightly more affordable than the iPhone Duo, which comes in at $1,999.

Google Android Leadership Endorsement of Samsung Hardware

Amid intense hardware competition, Samsung’s foldable ecosystem continues to secure high-profile supporters within the tech industry, including the president of Google’s Android platform. In a recent interview with Tom’s Guide, Sameer Samat, president of Android at Google, revealed that he has been using Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and is a big fan of the device.

App Optimization and Developer Momentum in the Foldable Ecosystem

The expansion of foldable devices relies heavily on software adaptation. Addressing the maturity of the form factor, the Android executive noted:

While he acknowledged that some popular apps still lack specific optimizations, many developers are actively building these features or are in talks with Google to do so as tools become simpler to utilize.
