WP “Involvement in Chinese media venture business similar to Netflix after amnesty in 2020”
There have been reports that former campaign manager Paul Manafort (75), a close associate of former U.S. President Donald Trump and known to serve as a campaign adviser for the Republican National Convention to select a presidential candidate in July, was involved in the Chinese media business.
It is also known that he intended to serve as an advisor to Korean and Japanese politicians.
According to the Washington Post (WP) on the 10th (local time), Manafort was involved in the business of launching a mobile streaming and entertainment platform similar to Netflix in China after his pardon in 2020. It is said that this project received permission from the Chinese government at the time.
Manafort denied this, saying, “I am not involved in China, nor am I doing anything related to Chinese business or government,” but explained, “I was only asked by a venture company to introduce me to American partners and studios.”
WP said, “Manafort’s involvement in previously unknown Chinese media ventures may be problematic,” adding, “In 2020, he was described by a bipartisan Senate panel as a ‘serious counterintelligence threat’ because of his ties to Russia. “In a situation where conflict with China is acute, we have provided a link for those who want to do business in China.”
“Given his relationship with China, Manafort’s role in Chinese ventures could complicate his return to the camp,” said Barry Bennett, a Republican consultant who worked with Manafort on the Trump campaign during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
He tried to advise politicians in Korea and Japan, and political party officials in those countries inquired about his reputation, the WP reported.
Manafort also visited Guatemala last year at the invitation of an immigration advocacy group, and is said to have been introduced to Guatemala’s presidential candidate there.
Manafort, who worked as the head of the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election, was sentenced to prison for money laundering and obstruction of justice during special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election. However, he was released when former President Trump pardoned him at the end of his term.
