Trump Attacks Cuellar Over “Lack of Loyalty” After Pardon,re-Election Bid
A recent pardon from former President Donald Trump has ignited a public dispute with texas Representative Henry Cuellar,as Trump criticizes the Democrat for choosing to run for re-election as a Democrat rather than switching parties. The controversy underscores trump’s emphasis on personal loyalty and raises questions about the implications of presidential pardons.
Pardon and Indictment
On Wednesday, Trump issued a pardon to Cuellar, who had been indicted in 2024 on 14 charges including conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and money laundering. The Justice Department, under the Biden administration, alleged that Cuellar and his wife accepted $600,000 from Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company and an unnamed Mexican bank in exchange for influencing congressional decisions. Both cuellar and his wife have maintained their innocence. Trump stated he issued the pardon because he believed Cuellar had been politically targeted for “bravely” opposing what he termed “Open Borders.”
Cuellar’s Decision and Trump’s Response
Hours after receiving the pardon, Cuellar filed for re-election as a Democrat, a move that dashed Republican hopes of bolstering their slim majority in the House of Representatives. Trump responded with a scathing social media post, decrying Cuellar’s decision as a display of “Such a lack of LOYALTY,” and warning, “Oh’ well, next time, no more Mr.Nice guy!”
Trump further accused “radical left” Democrats of a “merciless” and “evil quest” to “destroy” Cuellar and his family, claiming this was motivated by the congressman’s support for “BORDER SECURITY!” He admitted to never having spoken with Cuellar or his family but said he “felt very good about fighting” for them because they were “treated sooo BADLY!” Despite the pardon, Trump expressed frustration that Cuellar was “continuing to work with the same Radical Left Scum that just weeks before wanted him and his wife to spend the rest of their lives in Prison – And probably still do!”
Cuellar Defends His Position
Cuellar has staunchly defended his decision to remain a democrat. Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, he stated, “I’m an American, I’m a Texan and I’m a Democrat in that order.” When asked about Trump’s criticism, Cuellar said, “I am a conservative Democrat, but I will work with the President.” He even revealed that Trump was in his thoughts during church on Sunday, stating, “I prayed for the president, I prayed for his family, and I prayed for the presidency because if the president succeeds, the country succeeds.”
A Pattern of Expecting Loyalty
This public rebuke of Cuellar is not an isolated incident. Trump’s emphasis on loyalty has been a recurring theme throughout his political career. Last month, a group of federal labor unions filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over a “loyalty question” included in federal job applications. The question required applicants to identify Trump policy initiatives and explain how they would advance his agenda. Trump himself has repeatedly stated his prioritization of loyalty, once declaring, “I value loyalty above everything else-more than brains, more than drive, and more than energy.”
