Former president of the USA Donald Trump was taken into custody at a Miami courthouse on Tuesday, where he faces criminal charges that he illegally kept national security documents after leaving the White House and lied to government officials who tried to retrieve them.
According to a court spokesman, Trump and his former aide Walt Nauta were held pending an arraignment scheduled for 3:00 PM ET. After the indictment, Trump will be released on bail. The court session is being held behind closed doors, it is reported Voice of America.
Federal authorities have increased security around the courthouse, and Miami officials have said they are ready in case of aggression from supporters of the ex-president and protesters.
“In our city, we believe in the Constitution and believe that people should have the right to express themselves. But we also believe in law and order. And we know that, and we hope that the day will be peaceful,” said the mayor of Miami the day before Francis Suarez at a press conference.
On June 9, the US Federal Court published 37 charges against Donald Trump. The former president of the United States is accused of, among other things, unauthorized storage of classified documents and conspiracy to obstruct justice after he leaves the White House in 2021.
The court decision was made public on a day when two lawyers announced that they would not represent the interests of the former president, and a former aide to the ex-president, Walt Nauta, was charged in connection with the improper handling of classified papers at the Trump residence.
According to the most “serious” of the articles of the indictment, Trump faces up to 20 years in prison. The former US president has already stated on his own social network that he does not admit guilt.
Journalists call the charges against the former president brought forward by the federal prosecutor’s office unprecedented – this has never happened in the history of the United States.
In addition, the process will take place against the background of the presidential election race. Elections will be held next year and Trump will be one of the candidates leading in the polls. But the prosecution will not be an obstacle for conducting the election campaign.
Trump and his political allies call the persecution revenge on the part of the Democratic president Joe Biden. In turn, the White House stated that it did not know in advance about the indictment against the ex-president.
Last August, the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Then 11 sets of secret documents and about two dozen boxes, the contents of which were not reported, were confiscated.
Trump claimed that the seizure was illegal because he himself declassified many of the documents during his presidency.
