Vance’s various remarks cause controversy… Some conservatives say, “We need to change”
Former US President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has defended his troubled vice presidential candidate (running mate) Senator J.D. Vance.
Senator Vance was selected for his youth and freshness, which could help him win over swing voters, but some conservatives are calling for a “replacement of candidates” as criticism grows over his past harsh remarks toward women and Democratic Party members.
Former President Trump said at a debate hosted by the Association of Black Journalists on the 31st (local time), “I think he (Vance) values his family,” and “But not having a family doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with him.”
He continued, “Historically, the vice president has no influence in terms of elections. In fact, he has no influence at all,” and argued, “Voting is for the presidential candidate.”
Former President Trump then said, “You can have a vice president who is very versatile in every way, and I think JD is that person.”
Senator Vance was previously in hot water after it was revealed that in a 2021 Fox News interview he referred to Vice President Kamala Harris and others as “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”
The remarks drew a backlash from some Republican political strategists, who warned that Senator Vance’s irresponsible remarks could cost him valuable votes in the US presidential election.
Senator Vance grew up in a poor white family in the Rust Belt of Ohio. His parents divorced when he was young and he lived with his grandmother.
Republicans have called on Senator Vance to apologize for his past comments.
“Americans are very generous,” said pro-Trump Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, adding that Vance should apologize to childless American families.
However, a former adviser to President Trump drew the line at the replacement theory, saying, “There was no talk at all in the camp about replacing the running mate.”
The anonymous adviser predicted that voters’ attention would shift away from Vance and toward the Democrats, who chose Vice President Harris as their presidential candidate.
