Providence Mayor Brett Smiley addressed the public, stating that a shooter is currently not in custody. He implored the community to offer prayers for the victims and their families, acknowledging the especially challenging timing with the approaching Christmas holiday. “It’s going to be a difficult rest of the day, difficult days and months ahead as this community heals,” the mayor said.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting late Saturday afternoon and responded via his social media platform. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he posted.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding the identities of the victims or whether they were students at the university. The mayor declined to comment on the victims’ student status during a press conference.
