Trump Urges Google to Reinstate Univision on YouTube TV, citing Republican Midterm Impact
A dispute over broadcast rights has taken a surprising political turn, as former President Donald Trump publicly pressured Google to restore Univision channels to YouTube TV.The move underscores the growing recognition of the Spanish-language broadcaster’s influence, especially within the Republican party as the midterm elections approach.
YouTube TV dropped Univision’s channels nearly a week ago, stemming from a failure to reach a new carriage agreement. The disagreement, typically a routine business negotiation, has been elevated into a high-profile political matter.
“Having the leading Spanish language broadcaster in the United States blacked out on YouTube TV ‘is VREY BAD for Republicans in the upcoming Midterms,'” Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday night. He directly appealed to Google, urging them “for the purpose of FAIRNESS,” to “please let Univision back!”
This intervention represents another instance of Trump publicly leveraging his influence over a major media company – in this case, one of the world’s largest, YouTube, with its billions of monthly users.
YouTube responded to the situation on Sunday, stating through a spokesperson that they “remain open to negotiating an agreement that reflects their performance on YouTube TV. Until then, their content remains unavailable on YouTube TV.” The company’s statement acknowledges the standard nature of these negotiations, which often involve legal and public relations maneuvering.
However, Univision has actively sought to frame the dispute as a political issue, garnering support from numerous lawmakers and now, the former president. This strategy highlights the network’s perceived importance in reaching Hispanic voters.
Televisa Univision CEO Daniel Alegre expressed gratitude for Trump’s support, writing on social media, “Thank you very much President Trump for recognizing the impact of Univision and the importance of Hispanics.” Alegre further emphasized Univision’s role, stating, “We take pride in Univision representing the voice of Hispanic America. It is our priority to bring Univision back to YouTube TV.”
YouTube TV has rapidly emerged as a popular alternative to traditional cable and satellite television, offering a bundled package of channels for a monthly subscription fee. The company attributes the stalled negotiations to Univision’s “unrealistic demands.”
According to a YouTube spokesperson, “TelevisaUnivision has over 160 million subscribers and billions of views across YouTube, where they generate ad revenue from their content. On our paid live TV subscription service, YouTube TV, however, TelevisaUnivision only represents a tiny fraction of overall consumption.”
Trump’s concern appears to be rooted in a personal assessment of Univision’s value as a political asset. He noted in his post that the network “were so good to me with their highest rated ever political Special, and I set a Republican Record in Hispanic voting.” He clearly views Univision as instrumental in his past campaign successes.
Univision, in turn, has cultivated a warmer relationship with Trump in recent years, as its ownership has reportedly pursued a more centrist approach. This shift in corporate strategy appears to have aligned with Trump’s political interests.
The timing of Trump’s public appeal to YouTube is particularly noteworthy, coming just days after the platform reached a settlement agreement with the former president. This agreement resolved a lawsuit Trump filed following his suspension from social media platforms after the January 6, 2021, insurrection. As part of the settlement, YouTube agreed to pay $22 million to the trust for the National Mall, earmarked for the construction of the White House State Ballroom.
this confluence of events – a contentious carriage dispute, a presidential intervention, and a recent legal settlement – underscores the complex interplay between media, politics, and business in the modern landscape. The outcome of the negotiations between YouTube TV and Univision will likely have implications beyond the immediate business interests of both companies, perhaps influencing the political narrative leading up to the midterm elections.
