Trump Faces Backlash for Racist Video Depicting Obamas
Table of Contents
A deeply controversial video shared by former President Donald Trump on Thursday night depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes has ignited widespread condemnation, renewing scrutiny of his history of sharing racially charged content. The video, which also promotes unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, quickly drew criticism from political figures and observers alike.
The Content of the Video
The short video features the Obamas’ faces superimposed onto the bodies of apes in a jungle setting. For approximately one second, the opening bars of the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” accompany the imagery. The post is widely seen as echoing a harmful and historically pervasive racist stereotype comparing Black individuals to primates.
White House Response and Wider Condemnation
In a statement released Friday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the outrage as “feigned,” characterizing the video as an “internet meme” portraying Trump as the “King of the Jungle” and Democrats as characters from “The Lion King.” This response has itself drawn further criticism. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office swiftly condemned the video on X, stating, “Disgusting behavior by the President. All Republicans must denounce it. Now.”
A Pattern of Controversial Posts
This incident is not isolated. Last year, Trump shared an apparently artificial intelligence-generated video depicting Barack Obama being arrested in the Oval Office. Prior to that, Trump and members of his administration circulated digitally altered images and videos of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries featuring a fabricated mustache and hat, which Jeffries publicly labeled as racist.
Lack of Response from the Obamas
As of Friday, the Obamas have not publicly responded to the video. CNN has reached out for comment but has not yet received a reply.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing debate surrounding Trump’s use of social media and the potential for his posts to amplify harmful stereotypes and misinformation. The incident raises questions about the responsibility of public figures in the digital age and the impact of online content on public discourse.
