The current diplomatic friction stems from months of high-stakes conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran since hostilities began on February 28. Despite intermittent periods of relative calm and on-and-off diplomacy, Iran retains its enriched uranium stockpiles and continues to possess the capability to target US and allied positions in the region with missiles and drones.
Disputed Diplomacy: Washington Claims Talks While Tehran Points to Oman
The two governments present sharply conflicting accounts of current diplomatic channels. While Trump dismissed Tehran’s leadership as unbelievably duplicitous
for publicly denying direct engagement, Iranian officials maintained that no negotiations are happening with Washington.

Trump rejected those limitations, asserting on social media that Washington and Tehran are actively addressing long-standing issues. Trump pointed to an ongoing US naval blockade known as a Wall of Steel
that prevents commercial traffic from reaching southern Iranian ports without explicit American approval.
The Strait of Hormuz Sticking Point and Nuclear Demands
Discussions between the parties focus heavily on two major pillars: restoring access to the Strait of Hormuz and limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump outlined a two-phase framework for any eventual agreement.
The first phase centers on reopening the vital maritime trade corridor, which could occur quickly. Phase two would address long-term denuclearization, a process the US president acknowledged would take more time.
Control over the narrow waterway remains a primary obstacle. Before the war, there was free passage through Hormuz, but Iran reprised a blockade after a previous ceasefire collapsed, obstructing commercial vessels and insisting that ships hug the Iranian coast while levying transit fees. The United States has firmly rejected allowing Iran to charge passing commercial vessels.
A Familiar Playbook of Brinkmanship and Delayed Strikes
The latest ultimatum follows a pattern established over more than five months of conflict. Trump backed away from military action roughly a dozen times since late February, frequently threatening massive bombardments before pausing operations to give diplomacy another opening.
Over the weekend, Trump called off what he described as a massive impending attack—which he claimed would have been the biggest since World War II—after receiving direct appeals from Gulf partners Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Iranian media, however, rejected claims that Tehran asked Washington to halt strikes.
Ongoing Maritime Incidents and Uncertain Next Steps
With a previous ceasefire having fallen through last month, the success of these latest talks remains contingent on whether Washington and Tehran can reconcile their starkly different positions on regional navigation and maritime fees before the next diplomatic deadline expires.
