The escalating tensions come amid increased federal immigration enforcement in cities like Chicago, where recent raids have led to mass arrests and protests.
pritzker Condemns Unilateral Troop Deployment
Governor Pritzker vehemently opposed the deployment, asserting that President Trump had ordered 400 Texas National Guard members sent to Illinois, Oregon, and other unnamed states without the knowledge or consent of those states’ governments. “I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate,” Pritzker stated on X, formerly known as twitter, on Sunday evening. “There is no reason a president should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge,consent,or cooperation.”
Governor Abbott swiftly responded,affirming his “full authorisation” of the troop deployment. In a post on X, Abbott framed the issue as a matter of enforcing federal law, stating, “You can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it.” He further emphasized the pride with which the Texas National Guard serves, adding, “The Texas National Guard ‘defend our country with pride.'”
Immigration Raids Fuel Protests, Concerns Over Tactics
The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of heightened immigration enforcement activity. In Chicago, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have conducted large-scale arrests, triggering widespread protests. reports indicate aggressive tactics employed during these operations,including a raid where agents “rappelled from Black Hawk helicopters” to storm an apartment building,according to NewsNation.
Concerns have been raised regarding the treatment of those detained, with residents and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights reporting that both children and US citizens were among those zip-tied during the raids. One US citizen, Rodrick Johnson, 67, recounted to the Chicago Sun-Times that agents forcibly entered his home and restrained him without presenting a warrant or offering access to legal counsel. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer,” Johnson said. “They never brought one.”
Legal Challenges Mount, Oregon Secures Temporary Block
The legality of the troop deployment is now being contested in court. On Sunday, a federal judge issued a temporary block preventing the deployment of troops to Oregon, following a legal challenge from the state. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield announced that Oregon and California had jointly filed a lawsuit, initially targeting the deployment of California National Guard troops to Oregon, but later expanded to include personnel from all states, including Texas.
Rayfield stated that Oregon “will absolutely not be a party to the president’s attempt to normalise the use of the United States military in our American cities.” A similar temporary block was also issued late Sunday regarding a previous attempt by the Trump administration to deploy National Guard troops from California to oregon and Portland.
Trump’s Rhetoric Raises alarm
The situation is further complicated by recent statements from Trump,who,last week,told a gathering of US military generals that he anticipates the US military will be needed to address an “enemy from within … before it gets out of control.” This rhetoric has fueled concerns about the potential for increased militarization of domestic law enforcement and the erosion of civil liberties.
The ongoing dispute highlights a deepening divide between state and federal authorities, and raises fundamental questions about the limits of presidential power and the rights of states to govern within their borders.
