WELLINGTON: A tsunami alert was issued in the Pacific island nation of Tonga following a submarine volcanic eruption. Huge waves pounded homes and buildings along the coast. Coastal residents have shifted to higher ground following the tsunami alert. No altercation was reported at the party, and no motive has been identified for the killings. Video footage of waves crashing into homes has surfaced on social media.

The Hunga Tonga Hunga Hapai volcano erupted 30 km southeast of the island of Fonuapho in Tonga. It is the largest explosion in Tonga in 30 years. The first blast occurred on Friday. But on Saturday, the volcano erupted seven times stronger. According to Tonga Geological Services, the ash and gas from the blast spread for about 20 km.

Meanwhile, a tsunami alert was issued for areas close to the island. The warning was issued in neighboring Japan’s Amami and Tokara islands, the east coast of Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, and parts of the US.
