Tsunami Alert Issued for Parts of Indonesia Following 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a tsunami warning for five regions following a significant earthquake in the Philippine Sea. The alert follows a 7.4 magnitude tectonic earthquake that struck on Friday,October 10,2025.
The BMKG has identified the Talaud Islands, Bitung City, Southern North Minahasa, Southern Minahasa, and Supiori as areas facing a potential tsunami threat, classifying the risk level as “Alert.” According to a statement released by BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director, Daryono, “The modeling results show that this earthquake has the potential for a tsunami.”
Initial reports indicate that the earthquake’s vibrations were strongly felt in Tahuna,registering an intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) scale – meaning it was felt by many people indoors. In Manado, the vibrations were measured at MMI II, felt by some individuals as light shaking.
As of 09:14 WIB on October 10,2025,the BMKG reported no detected aftershock activity. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Residents are also advised to inspect their homes for structural damage and avoid buildings exhibiting cracks or othre signs of instability.
Local and regional governments in the affected areas have been directed to initiate complete evacuations. A senior official stated that governments with an “Alert” status should “instantly direct people to stay away from beaches and river banks.”
